Doubts about skirts
the truth about black, blue and platinum

The most popular photos of a skirt spread on the global Internet, arguing about the eye problem of "black blue and platinum". In fact, the color change of the skirt is related to the brightness of its background. Is seeing different colors a problem with my eyes? Let's find out!

There are two types of photoreceptor cells in our eyes, named after their shape: rods and cones.

Rods discriminate around the retina and are responsible for recognizing black and white shadows, especially for vision in dark environments. Rods are particularly sensitive to light. Cones are concentrated in the yellow spot area, mainly distinguishing colors, including red, green, and blue, and are responsible for the operation in the case of sufficient light.

When the lights are turned off at night, it goes dark because the cones stop working and then the rods start working. After 5 to 10 minutes, you can see objects in the dark, but no color. This explains why, at night, the longer you stare at the sky, the more stars you see. In addition, when we look at the smartphone in the dark, cones are stimulated by light to operate, expose and absorb light. When we turn off the phone and close our eyes, a circular light and shadow will appear, because the yellow spots absorb light and need time to relax.

The skirt is originally black and blue, but when the background luminosity changes, if the sensitivity of the cones is reduced in dim light, it reflects that the skirt is white, and the perception of color is also biased in low light, resulting in color mixing and sudden change.
